Almost all poker games are played with three different betting structures (or limits). They determine how bets are placed and how the game is played. These structures can be divided into the following three main categories: Fixed Limit (Limit), Pot Limit, and No Limit.

Betting options
Before we continue, let’s first talk about a basic concept: the betting options you have during a poker hand.
During a poker hand, you have 5 options. Familiarize yourself with these options:
- Check: Stay in your hand without betting (as long as no one else bets).
- Bet: The first player to put money into the pot starts betting. The other players then have to decide whether to go, drop out, or raise.
- Folds: Discard your cards and forgo the option to stay in your hand and fight for the pot.
- Call: Double the full amount another player has bet to stay in the hand.
- Raise: Increase the value of the current bet. Other players will have to decide whether to drop out, go with them, or increase their bet further.
No-limit poker
No-limit poker games like Texas Holdem take center stage and dominate the poker scene. This immense popularity is the reason why No Limit Hold’em is in the spotlight as the main event in most poker tournaments. It is also the game of choice in most poker broadcasts.
In no-limit poker games, as the name suggests, there is no maximum limit for players’ bets. However, there is one limitation: your stake is limited by the chips you have on the table. For example, in a cash game, you can’t simply add more money from your wallet to increase your bet beyond what’s on the table. This principle is called „Table Stakes“.
In addition to table bets, players have the freedom to place bets with any number of chips as long as their bet reaches or exceeds the minimum bet, which is usually set at a big blind. When a bet is placed, a player seeking an increase must re-bet at least that amount. For example, if a player bets $2, he must bet at least $4 – consisting of the $2 to go and a minimum increase of $2.
The abbreviation „NL“ is commonly used for no-limit poker games. „NLH“, for example, stands for No Limit Hold’em.
Fixed Limit Poker or Limit
Fixed limit is usually referred to as „limit“ and unlike no-limit poker games, limit games set limits on the amount of your bet. The key feature is that players can only bet a certain amount at a time, depending on the phase of the hand.
Most commonly, fixed-limit games have two bet sizes, the so-called small bet and the large bet. Many limit games use a structure where the maximum bet/increase in the first betting rounds corresponds to the small bet and increases to the large bet amount in later betting rounds.
In games like Hold ’em and Omahag, there are four betting rounds: preflop, flop, turn, and river. If a four-round betting game is structured as a fixed limit with two bet sizes, the small bet size refers to the pre-flop and on-flop bet, while the large bet size refers to the turn and river bet.
For example, players can bet/raise in $1 units at a $1/$2 limit hold’em table before the flop and at the flop, and in $2 units at the turn and river.
There are five betting rounds in games like Seven-Card Stud and Razz. If a five-round betting game is structured as a fixed limit with two betting sizes, the small betting size refers to the bets in the first two betting rounds, while the large betting size refers to the bets in the last three rounds.
Another important consideration is that in limit games, each round of betting (street) usually has a maximum number of allowable raises, generally three. Normally, a bet can only be increased three times, after which all players must go or drop out. But each poker room has its own specific rules, so make sure you check them before you sit down at the table.
Pot limit poker
While no-limit games allow unrestricted betting and fixed-limit tables allow rigid bet sizes, pot-limit poker strikes a balance between the two. In pot limit games, your bet is limited to the current size of the pot.
Excessive elevations are limited in the initial phase of the hand. Since only the small blind, big blind, and potential antes contribute to the pot, the bet limit remains low. However, as the hand evolves, bet limits steadily increase with the size of the pot, allowing for situations where one player can leave or all-in another player.
Apart from this difference, which limits the amount of the bet to the size of the pot, the rest of the gameplay is largely the same as in a no-limit game.
Therefore, pot limit games are more similar to no-limit poker than fixed-limit poker. Pot Limit Omaha (PLO), in particular, is the best-known and most-played game in this betting structure.
